Setting up an institutional repository is the easy part; keeping it going,
in the long term, year after year, is hard. It's also not cheap.
While repositories can be set up initially using existing infrastructure,
they cannot be maintained successfully without real commitment from their
home institutions, backed up by ongoing funding.
The repository movement may be in bandwagon phase now, with many institutions queueing up to create one. But to succeed, and to stay viable, repositories need solid business models, adequate staffing, appropriate institutional support, such as mandatory deposit policies, and guaranteed funding so that staff time can be allocated to building, publicising and improving the service rather than endlessly chasing funding.
Most institutions now have a solid grasp of the theory of open access repositories, but what's the reality? What do they really cost? Can it be demonstrated that they give value for money? What are the successful business models? What are the compelling arguments in favour of building one that will attract ever-scarcer funds? How do we become important players in our institutions?

The cost of The Successful Repository is $75 per person.
This amount is subsidised by the Australian Partnership for Sustainable Repositories which is funded to do outreach work in this area by the Department of Education, Science and Training as part of the Commonwealth Government's "Backing Australia's Ability - An Innovative Action Plan for the Future".
Places for this event are limited because of the size of the venue.
