The Data Management Plan: Putting policy into practice

A one-day invitational workshop

9:30am to 4:30pm, 8 August, 2008 at the Gryphon Gallery, University of Melbourne

APSR is planning an invitational workshop on the topic of data management planning within institutions, especially universities. With the increasing emphasis on eResearch and the growing reliance across all disciplines on digital media for data creation, storage, manipulation and re-use, there is a need to ensure that data management planning is seen as a necessary step in the research management process.

The workshop will build on work already carried out by the OAK Law Project at the Queensland University of Technology, the work of the ORCA Support Network, and of other Australian universities.

The workshop will address issues such as:

The legal and regulatory environment
The university policy environment
What strategies can we employ to get the issue of data management planning onto the organizational agenda?
Who has responsibility for promulgating the need for data management planning?
Who has responsibility for ensuring that data management planning is done well (or done at all)?
What training can be offered on “how to prepare a data management plan”?
What are the key messages we want to give to our graduate students?
How do we handle the cultural changes issues associated with data management planning?

Breakout sessions will be organised around some of these key issues.

Data centre and repository managers
Academic staff engaged in the planning and conduct of research
Librarians
Designers and implementers of information literacy programs
University policy developers
Staff of research offices

Participation

In order to have a productive discussion, the size of the workshop is limited. Prospective participants should contact Margaret Henty by 4 July outlining their interest and relevant work that they are doing in this area; unless otherwise requested, these will be shared with other participants and become part of a public report. Selected attendees will be asked to give brief presentations based on these submissions.

Participants will be advised that they have been selected to attend by July 18.

Cost

There will be no cost associated with this workshop. This event is subsidised by the Australian Partnership for Sustainable Repositories which is funded to do outreach work in this area by the Department of Education, Science and Training as part of the Commonwealth Government's "Backing Australia's Ability - An Innovative Action Plan for the Future".

Participants will be responsible for meeting their own travel and accommodation costs.
